Sian Ellis Artist

I am an illustrator, writer and mural artist based in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. I am inspired by folklore and ghost stories and I am the creator of the quarterly folklore zine ‘Tell the Bees.’ Since the zine’s first printing in July 2023 I have created 7 issues and sold in excess of 2200 copies.

Previous issue themes include The History of Halloween, Folklore in Film and Britain’s Weirdest Ghosts. In 2024 I launched my ‘Haunted Maps’ series where I create zines and illustrated maps of geographical areas featuring local folklore, ghost stories and curious places. My Haunted Yorkshire map drew interest and coverage from BBC news, The Week and channel 5. I have also been approached by a major UK publishing house about the possibility of adapting my work into a book.

My playful and accessible work adorns walls, shop shutters, comms boxes, shipping containers and even a Chicken Shed in locations across Yorkshire. Since 2019 I have been commissioned to paint over 30 fibreglass sculptures for Charity Arts trails across the UK including the Bears of Sheffield and Go Wild Gorillas Jersey. Although not all of my sculptures were sent to auction, the 18 that have been have raised over £105,000 for local good causes across the UK. In 2023 I was commissioned to design the base sculpture character for the 2024 Snooks with Books art trail which will saw 25 6ft tall versions of my original Snook character displayed across York City Centre, each painted by a different artist from across the UK.

I work in a mixture of mediums including paint, detailed pen drawings and digital illustration. My work has been published in the zines Myth and Lore, Knock Knock by Frisson Comics and Illustrated Women in History.

My work has been exhibited at a number of exhibition spaces including The Fish Factory, Cornwall, The Art House, Sheffield, The Arts Tower, Sheffield, Todmorden Folklore Centre and as part of art trails up and down the UK. I have presented my work at high profile events such as Thoughtbubble convention and MCM London. My work is currently sold in 15 bricks and mortar stores around the UK including the East Anglian Folklore Museum, Ryedale Folk Museum and at the award winning Mother Shipton’s Cave.
